Imagine being in a room with coloured lights dancing across the walls, the sounds of the sea playing in the background and a smell of lavender in the air. The effect can be stimulating, therapeutic, soothing and has the ability to calm.
Fundraiser Daphne Sharp, has worked alongside the multi-disciplinary teams, who have together identified the need and evidence base for this type of room on an older adult ward specifically for people with dementia.
The room is a place where individuals can relax, explore their environment through their senses and enables carers and staff to develop quality time and new ways of communicating with the service users.
Complementary therapies like aromatherapy, therapeutic touch and massage can then be directed through individual care plans of service users on Baswich ward.
David Kidney, MP, officially opened the Multi Sensory Room on 25 October 2008.
